Assessing the impact of market volatility on your investments

Thursday 28 January, 2016

During January 2016 we have witnessed very volatile global stock markets due to: falling oil prices, uncertainty in China and global growth concerns.

Neil Homer, Financial Adviser, Stafford said: ’Our clients are understandably concerned about the current volatility in equity markets, and how it is impacting on their investment performance. The graph below shows the performance of the UK stockmarket over the past 28 years and it justifies why we always recommend that our clients maintain a long term perspective when they invest in equity markets. It also supports our recommendation that clients should always invest in a diversified portfolio where only part of their investments are exposed to UK and global stockmarkets.

Although periods of stock market volatility and short-term setbacks should be considered within a long-term context, sometimes it is not always possible. If you are coming up to retirement or have entered into an income drawdown arrangement you may want to speak to an Independent Financial Adviser to get individual investment advice.
